Disinformation vs Misinformation: Understanding the Difference

According to the American Psychology Association, "Misinformation is false or inaccurate information—getting the facts wrong. Disinformation is false information [that] is deliberately intended to mislead—intentionally misstating the facts." 

When reading, listening, or watching a story, ask yourself: is there an intent to deceive? Both misinformation and disinformation are harmful, potentially dangerous, and manipulative, but disinformation is shared for a purpose.
